People are leaving cities. Everyone is talking about this, but what does this mean for you?

New York City. The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. For some, it’s known as The Center of the Universe. Perhaps NYC is not really the Center of the Universe, but it is the quintessential metropolis. But now, in the midst of the deadliest pandemic since the 1918 flu, it seems that some people would prefer not to live in a bustling city of 8 million souls.

NYC is naturally the most prominent example of the trend, but experts are predicting an exodus from cities overall. As CNBC quotes “Shark Tank” investor Robert Herjavec: “We’re about to see the biggest exodus from cities in 50 years.”

How do you interpret this trend as a sign maker? Just think of the market! If people are leaving cities, that means homes are going up for sale—which means an expanded market for signs related to sales, such as “for sale” and “for rent” signs (here's some sign stakes and frames for these purposes.)

It’s not only private homes that are going up for sale, though. Bloomberg Business Week reports that a full quarter of NYC tenants have missed four months of rent payments. With two-thirds of New Yorkers being renters, that equals a very chaotic situation.

The New York Post reports that “The Community Housing Improvement Program, a group representing mostly smaller landlords of rent-stabilized buildings, estimates that 20 percent of its members are in distress and may have to sell properties to stay afloat.”

It follows that residential “for sale” signs are not the only soon-to-be hot product. In NYC, larger “apartments for rent,” and even "building for sale," signs and banners are also going to be increasingly in demand. Now is the time to contact real estate brokers and close deals to supply them with the signs they need.
