The Law

New York City laws regulating emergency exit signs and lighting are some of the most strictest in the nation, and for good reason. NYC is home to about 8.4 million people in over 1 million buildings!

NYC's Local Law 26 mandates that commercial buildings 75 feet or higher have photoluminescent egress markings at all emergency exits to aid in visibility in the event of a fire or blackout.

The markings should be lower down on the wall so they are visible in smoke, and the glow time must exceed 8 hours.

"All exit path markings required herein shall be of an approved photoluminescent material. The markings shall be washable, non-toxic, non radioactive, and if subjected to fire must be self extinguishing when the flame is removed."

NYC administrative code §15. Section 27-383
